Cooling Solutions that won’t Hurt your Wallet

When you’re in the midst of a brutal, 40 degree Melbourne summer, you’d give anything for an air conditioning unit running non-stop, 24hrs a day – but you may be worried it could be too expensive. You know there has to be some way to keep cool in the summer without breaking the bank. Read on to learn about what your affordable cooling solution options are.

Cool the Air with Evaporative Cooling Systems

Evaporative cooling systems are quite cost effective and work very well in dry heat. These systems work by taking advantage of the water-to-water vapour transition that occurs with the process of evaporation. A pump will usually circulate water from a reservoir onto a cooling pad. A fan will draw air from outside the unit through the moistened pad, cooling the air with evaporation as it passes.

Because this system works off a very simple process, the running costs are quite low and affordable. In addition, you won’t have to pay much up front because it can be easily integrated into existing systems and it is simply a cheaper product to purchase than other methods of cooling. You will experience great energy savings with one of these systems, as well as a reduced demand of peak electricity and less energy interdependence.

Wall Mounted Split Systems: The Standard

While not quite as energy efficient as an evaporative cooling system, wall mounted split systems are a close choice and pretty much standard across Australian homes. You can only really cool one room at a time with them, but they can cool large rooms just fine, and they are easy enough to install and cheap enough to purchase if you wanted to get more than one.

Split system air conditioning units are made of two chambers. The indoor chamber contains an evaporative element that cools the air, and the outdoor chamber contains a compressor and a condenser that expel unwanted, hot air outside. The two units connect via tubes that are insulated and piped through the wall.

These systems are great because they don’t take up any floor space and are very efficient. Wall mounted split systems are also incredibly energy efficient, so you’ll save on energy bills in the future while reducing your carbon footprint.

DIY Air Conditioner

While you wait for someone to come round to your house to install an air conditioning unit, you might slowly melt. If you’re desperate, try creating your own DIY air conditioner. It might seem a bit funny, but if you’re too hot to move anyway, settle down somewhere in your house, close the blinds to keep the sun from coming in, and find yourself a bowl, or better yet, a block, of ice. Prop the ice in front of a functioning fan and allow the cool air to waft over you.
